SOLiD and Intel Alliance Leverages Intel mDR and FPGA Technology to Develop 5G mmWave Repeater

PLANO, Texas — September 2, 2020—SOLiD, the leader in indoor and outdoor cellular and public safety communications infrastructure, today announced new RocketWAVE™ 5G mmWave repeaters based on Intel mDR and FPGA technologies to address coverage challenges in high band spectrum.  The license of the Intel technology enhances SOLiD’s prior investment and development of 5G mmWave repeater technology.  Building on the success of multiple trials, the alliance leverages Intel’s field-proven technology to accelerate the time to market and improve the features of SOLiD’s RocketWAVE™ 5G mmWave repeaters.

There are three primary use-cases for enhancing coverage with 5G mmWave repeaters:  mobile outdoor urban, mobile in-building, and fixed-wireless access.

Outdoor urban 5G mmWave mobile coverage faces challenges resulting from reduced range and easily obstructed high band signals.  RocketWAVE™ 5G mmWave repeaters overcome these limitations by extending coverage distance and retransmitting signals around obstructions, which reduces CAPEX by decreasing the required number of 5G cell sites.

In-building 5G mmWave mobile coverage is not practical with an outside-in macro-cellular approach because high band signals do not penetrate buildings.  RocketWAVE™ receives 5G mmWave signals from a rooftop or wall mounted donor antenna and repeats the signals to antennas inside the building.

Fixed wireless access leverages the massive bandwidth of 5G mmWave to provide high-speed and low latency data connections.  But these connections mainly benefit from line-of-sight conditions from the 5G gNb to the consumer premise equipment (CPE) typically located on the windows of a building.  RocketWAVE™ 5G mmWave repeaters extendline-of-sight conditions and overcome the coverage gaps in the network by intelligently repeating signals around obstructions such as foliage, buildings, and natural terrain.

SOLiD architected this new solution based on Intel 5G mmWave Distributed Relay (mDR) technology assets and field-proven Intel Cyclone FPGAs.

“Integrating Intel’s technology will accelerate the development of RocketWAVE™ mmWave repeaters, which are a critical component of 5G deployments,” said Ken Sandfeld, President SOLiD Americas.   “Our RocketWAVE™ repeater will soon provide flexibility to the operators for ease of installation and maintenance through its unique and powerful cloud-based management software.

“SOLiD’s development on Intel’s mDR and Intel Cyclone® FPGA series can aid in overcoming connectivity challenges inherent in the mmWave bands. These technologies have the potential to significantly improve 5G coverage for operators rolling out 5G networks,” said Asha Keddy, Corporate Vice President and General Manager, Next Generation and Standards at Intel

SOLiD Responds to CommScope’s Patent Infringement Suits

PLANO, Texas — May 26, 2020 — SOLiD, the leader in cellular in-building and public safety infrastructure, intends to vigorously defend itself against the lawsuits filed by CommScope on May 18, 2020.

SOLiD is a leading innovator, and has invested tens of millions of dollars in independently developing its innovative technology, including the Genesis DAS accused by CommScope.  While others were talking about deploying 5G solutions, SOLiD was already deploying 5G solutions in South Korea where SOLiD has been delivering the world’s first commercially deployed 5G repeater and DAS since 2018.

SOLiD respects valid intellectual property rights of third parties.  It will seek sensible solutions where necessary, and defend itself vigorously in courts as necessary as it has done successfully in the past in a patent lawsuit brought by another global company.  SOLiD is disappointed that CommScope has chosen to file these lawsuits, and believes that CommScope’s actions are harmful to the industry as a whole and to both companies’ customers.

SOLiD notes that while CommScope’s complaints and press release tout CommScope’s supposed success in litigating its patents against another, different company, the other company’s products are different from SOLiD’s Genesis DAS and the case is being appealed by CommScope itself.

SOLiD looks forward to a resolution of these matters, and to the extent necessary, is confident it will prevail against CommScope’s allegations in the US and UK courts.

SOLiD Launches RocketWAVE Technology Platform to Fulfill Promise of mmWave 5G

New in-building solution ensures quality of experience where mobile subscribers typically spend much of their time

PLANO, Texas — October 23, 2019—SOLiD, the leader in cellular in-building and public safety infrastructure, today launched the SOLiD RocketWAVETM5G off-air repeater platform. The RocketWAVE solution will provide millimeter wave (mmWave) signal distribution, 5G performance, speed and capacityindoors. New RocketWAVE mmWAVE products offer a simple, economical solution to assure seamless in-building service for mobile operators wishing to extend their mmWave networks indoors in the United States. RocketWAVE mmWave products will support 24GHz, 28Ghz, and 39GHz individually.

Without reliable in-building solutions, 5G subscribers will experience a drastic drop in performance every time they walk indoors, resulting in poor customer experience often leading to high churn rates. This issue is particularly problematic with new mmWave frequencies, given their higher attenuation and short propagation nature. Moreover, the challenge of extending 5G coverage indoors is further complicated by the increasing use of energy-efficient building materials, which can block or weaken many RF signals.

"The reliance on an outdoor-to-indoor strategy for 5G mmWave coverage depends on the assumption that small cell sites on lower height poles and structures are readily available. EJL Wireless Research has proven this strategy to be flawed, given the state of 5G mmWave networks across the U.S. currently,” said Earl J. Lum, Founder and President, EJL Wireless Research. “The RocketWAVE solution bypasses the requirement for small cell sites to deploy 5G mmWave radios, and allows for the mobile operator to directly feed 5G mmWave signals indoors from off-air repeaters deployed on rooftops. This enables support for enterprise users without the need to try to beam the signals through Low-E Glass windows or require outdoor CPEs to be mounted below the tree line."

“While everyone is focused on how to plan their networks to build out sufficient 5G outdoor coverage, the fact remains that up to 80 percent of mobile traffic occurs indoors,” said Ken Sandfeld, President of SOLiD Americas. “Our new RocketWAVE 5G technology platform unleashes the full potential of mmWave 5G performance where 5G subscribers want service, indoors. RocketWAVE will provide ‘hotspot’ 5G service exactly where the mobile operator wants it, allowing carriers to deliver an outstanding, seamless 5G experience that lives up to the hype.”

SOLiD has not yet announced a shipment date for this new product, but deliveries are expected to begin in 2020. To learn more, visit SOLiD in Booth 1918 at MWC 2019 in Los Angeles, October 22-24.
